Let’s celebrate the shortest day of the shortest day of the year and attract peace and good luck!
Yuletide Candle
Symbolism of the Yule Candle
Candles at Yule represent light returning after the longest night, echoing the rebirth of the Sun at the Winter Solstice. Lighting a candle is a symbolic act of hope, renewal, and spiritual cleansing. It’s often used in rituals to banish darkness and invite warmth, prosperity, and positive energy into the home.1
Best Colours for Yule Candles
Each colour carries a specific meaning in Yule traditions:
• Red – Vitality, strength, passion, and the Oak King’s victory over darkness. Use for courage and energy.2
• Green – Evergreen resilience, growth, and abundance. Perfect for grounding and prosperity spells.3
• Gold or Yellow – Solar energy, success, and rebirth of the Sun. Ideal for drawing warmth and blessings.4
• White or Silver – Purity, peace, and spiritual guidance. Represents snow and moonlight.3
I chose a white candle in a silver star casing as I want to attract peace, safe guidance and a little sprinkling of snow for Christmas!
I put the candle in a second container to ensure it was heatproof, added a base of salt, rosemary and bay leaves for protection. I dried some orange slices (which smell delicious) to attract happiness, and finally, some citrine for abundance and good luck.
There are many ways to mark this time of the year – Yule logs, Lantern walks, 12 day rituals and feasts to name a few. Rather than focus on the coming of winter let’s focus on the longer days of light to come.
I’d love to know if you celebrate, and if so, how?
